Evonet and Mastercard announced a joint pilot program for Agentic Payments during a private industry session. This initiative represents a significant advancement toward the realization of AI-driven commerce.
The significance of this pilot lies in its practical application. Led by Evonet’s AI research and development, and in collaboration with the ride-hailing platform Hoppa, the project introduced the Agenzo App. This application demonstrates a complete end-to-end loop—from “user intent” to “transaction authorization and payment”—within traditional payment networks and regulatory boundaries.
It is defined as Southeast Asia’s first commercially verifiable Agentic Payment landing case. This application enables users to request ride services through an AI interface and seamlessly complete transactions across more than 180 countries and regions. By integrating advanced LLM reasoning with modern payment and identity technologies, the project marks a critical shift for AI from “being able to talk” to “being able to transact.”
James Zhao, Chief Executive Officer of Evonet, emphasized the importance of this development for the Southeast Asian market: “As a regional acquirer, Evonet—supported by CardInfoLink’s robust technical system—is committed to providing simple, low-cost AI-era solutions. We aim to creatively build more commercial scenarios to serve diverse online and offline business formats.”
The project follows the principle of maximizing compatibility with existing infrastructure without introducing complex new protocols. It maintains the traditional “Four-Party Model” (Schemes, Acquirers, Issuers, and Merchants) by creatively combining existing interfaces and risk control:
- Tokenization: Replaces sensitive data with payment tokens for security.
- Passkey: Enhances identity verification and transaction efficiency.
- 3DS (3D Secure): Triggers strong authentication and risk strategies when needed.
The project utilizes the industry-standard MCP (Model Context Protocol) architecture to bridge AI reasoning with payment execution, forming a solution tailored for the Southeast Asian market. This pilot proves how agents can call upon existing payment networks under strict security and regulatory requirements, providing a repeatable engineering path for industries like retail, travel, and cross-border e-commerce.We are eager to continue collaborating with our partners, merchants, and ecosystem participants to further develop this nascent technology. This pilot marks merely the initial steps, the first phase of a transformative journey.
